The Biripi Buddies initiative.
A proud collaboration of the Bago Community of Schools Aboriginal Education Committee—continues to shine as a powerful way of strengthening cultural learning, inclusivity, and connections with the local Biripi community.
Students from Long Flat, Beechwood, Huntingdon, and Comboyne Public Schools are supported by Wauchope High School through rich cultural experiences, both in their own schools and during visits to the high school. This initiative nurtures identity, fosters connection, and ensures a smoother, more supported transition for Aboriginal students into secondary education.
For our Kindergarten to Year 2 students, Aunty Toni and Miss Caitlyn have been guiding young learners to build their knowledge and understanding of Biripi Country. This semester, students explored the meaning behind the colours of the Aboriginal flag—expressing their learning in the most delicious way by creating Aboriginal flag biscuits! They also deepened their understanding of the Acknowledgment of Country and practised Gathang language and Birpai totems through joyful dance and movement games.
Our Year 3–6 Aboriginal students from across the four schools came together once again for the Biripi Buddies cultural immersion days at Wauchope High School. The program began with a powerful Acknowledgment of Country, followed by Gathang introductions and a tour of the high school. Students engaged in language games, learned about the difference between a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgment of Country, and explored the significance of the Aboriginal flag.
Through yarning circles, students formed deeper connections with peers and high school mentors—building friendships and relationships that will support them well into their high school years.
In Term 2, the hands-on learning continued. Students took part in damper making, celebrating the role of food and community in culture. They joined in cultural dance led by the inspiring Yapun Yapun dancers and proud mentor Shonekqua, while the boys explored the didgeridoo and learned some deadly new dance moves from the Year 11 leaders.
The growth we see in our students—in cultural knowledge, confidence, and connection—fills us with pride. The Biripi Buddies initiative is proof of the power of collaboration: when schools, communities, and culture come together, we create opportunities for students to walk forward proudly in their identity.
Here’s to another term of learning, sharing, and walking strong together on Country.
